The Secret Writing According to John (Apocryphon of John), Codex II, 1 · 6 of 24 · tr. Samuel Zinner

Barbelo

This is because [we do] not [understand unspeakable things, and we] do not understand what [cannot be measured], apart from him who originated [from] him, that is, [the] Father, because he [alone] is the one who [explained] it to us, given that he is the one who studies him[self] inside his light that surrounds [him], that is, the spring [of] living water, and he is the one who supplies [every aeon], and in every direction (at once) he [observes] his image by gazing in the spring of the [Spirit]. He is the one who places his desire inside his [water]- light, [which dwells in the] spring of the [pure light]-water [IV, 7] [that] surrounds him, and [his (potential) thought became] actual, and she approached, [that is], she who had [appeared] in front of him inside [the glow of] his light. This is the first [power, which existed] before the All, and [which issued] forth from his mind. She [is the Providence of the All] – her light [glows like his] light – the [perfect] power who is [the] image of the perfect unseen, virginal Spirit. [The first power] (is) the glory of Barbelo, the perfect [II, 5] glory inside the aeons, the glory of the revelation. She extolled the virginal Spirit, and she is the one who praised him, because on account of him she had come forth. This is the first thought, his image. She became the universal womb because she is the one who exists before all of them, the Mother-Father, the Primal Man, the holy Spirit, the triple-male, the triple-powerful, the triple-named androgynous one, and the eternal aeon among the unseen ones, even the first one to issue forth. <She> entreated the unseen, virginal Spirit – that is, Barbelo – to grant her [IV, 8] Precognition, and the Spirit agreed, and when he had [agreed], Precognition approached, and attended Providence, she who originates from the Idea of the unseen, virginal Spirit. She extolled him [and] his perfect power, Barbelo, because they had come into being on account of her. She also entreated once more to grant her [Indestructibility], and he agreed. When he had [agreed], Indestructibility [approached], and attended Idea and Precognition. She extolled the unseen one and Barbelo, the one on whose account they had come into being. Barbelo also entreated to grant her eternal life, and the unseen Spirit agreed, and when he had agreed, Eternal Life approached, and they [attended] and extolled the unseen [Spirit] and Barbelo, on whose account they had come into being. She also entreated once more to grant her truth, and the unseen Spirit agreed. (var. *and [he agreed], and [when he had] agreed,*) Truth approached, and they attended and extolled the unseen, [II, 6] admirable Spirit and his Barbelo on whose account they had come into being. [IV, 9] This is the aeonic pentad of the Father, which is the Primal Man, the image of the unseen Spirit. This is Providence – that is, Barbelo – and Idea, and Precognition, and Indestructibility, and Eternal Life and Truth. This is the androgynous aeonic pentad, being the aeonic decad, which is the Father.

Themes
Aeonscosmology

Divine archetypal beings or eternal attributes dwelling within the Pleroma, often arranged in male-female syzygies.

The passage explicitly lists and defines multiple aeons (Barbelo, Idea, Precognition, etc.) as divine attributes dwelling within the Pleroma.

All passages →
Apophatic Theologytheology

Describing the divine only by negation—God transcends all positive categories and concepts; the via negativa.

The supreme source is described as 'unspeakable,' 'unmeasurable,' and 'unseen,' emphasizing its transcendence beyond human categories.

All passages →
Cosmogonycosmology

Narratives or doctrines of cosmic origin — how heaven, earth, and the primordial deities first came into being. The Kojiki's deities born alone on the Plain of High Heaven, Voluspo's Ginnungagap, Genesis's tohu wa-bohu, the Timaeus's Demiurge fashioning the Receptacle, the Hesiodic Theogony, the Kalevala's egg-cosmogony, Egyptian Nun-and-Atum. Distinct from emanation_hierarchy (structural-ontological cascade), letters_of_creation (mechanism of creation), and apocatastasis/frashokereti (end-state restoration); cosmogony is temporally-narrative beginning.

The text provides a narrative of cosmic origin, describing how the first powers and aeons came into being from the Father's thought.

All passages →
Divine Hiddennesstheology

The supreme God's radical concealment beyond ordinary knowledge or perception; the Hidden Father.

The Father is repeatedly characterized as the 'unseen Spirit' who remains concealed except through his self-revelation in Barbelo.

All passages →
Divine Lighttheology

The uncreated luminous quality of the divine, sometimes experienced directly in mystical states; illumination as revelation.

Light is the primary medium of divine existence and revelation, described as 'living water,' 'spring of light,' and the glow in which aeons appear.

All passages →
Emanation Hierarchycosmology

A chain of divine beings or principles flowing downward from a single transcendent source (the One or the Father), each level less perfect than the one above.

The passage details a precise ontological cascade where the Father generates Barbelo, who then generates Idea, Precognition, Indestructibility, Eternal Life, and Truth.

All passages →
Monadcosmology

The absolutely simple, undivided first principle from which all multiplicity and existence flows.

The 'unseen, virginal Spirit' or Father is presented as the singular, transcendent source from which all other divine principles flow.

All passages →
Numerical Mysticismtheology

Numbers, proportions, and mathematical relationships as the underlying structure of divine reality.

The passage structures the divine realm around specific numbers, explicitly naming the 'aeonic pentad' and the 'aeonic decad.'

All passages →
Opposites Transcendedanthropology

The dissolution of binary oppositions (male/female, inner/outer, above/below) as a mark of spiritual completion.

The text describes Barbelo and the Father as 'Mother-Father,' 'triple-male,' and 'androgynous,' dissolving binary gender distinctions in the divine realm.

All passages →
Pleromacosmology

The divine fullness or totality of the highest realm, populated by aeons and divine attributes, contrasted with the deficient material world.

The text describes the 'aeonic pentad' and 'decad' as the divine fullness populated by aeons like Barbelo and Providence, distinct from the material realm.
